Junior Cycle

The new Junior Cycle which replaces the exam focused Junior Certificate, ensures that student’s knowledge, skills and wellbeing are placed at the centre of the learning experience. Students become more actively involved in their learning by using investigative approaches, rather than simply being told. There is a greater emphasis on literacy, numeracy and key skills, which are addressed in all classes throughout Junior Cycle.

Dual Approach to Assessment

The Framework for Junior Cycle (2015) presents a dual approach to assessment which reduces the focus on one externally assessed examination and increases the prominence given to classroom-based assessment and formative assessment. 

In the case of each subject, students will complete two structured Classroom-Based Assessments, one which  will take place in second year, and the other during third year. After the second of the Classroom-Based Assessments, students will complete a written Assessment Task on what they have learned and the skills and competences that they have developed in that assessment. The Assessment Task, along with the final examination at the end of third year, will be marked by the State Examinations Commission (SEC).

Wellbeing

Students will undertake learning in an area entitled ‘Wellbeing’ throughout the three years of Junior Cycle.  Wellbeing will provide learning opportunities to enhance the physical, mental, emotional and social wellbeing and resilience of students, and to enable students to build life-skills and to develop a strong sense of connectedness to the school and to their community. It will also emphasise the role that students play in their family, community and society in general.
